::: Matsue's Memory over The Great Kanto Earthquake :::

My old friend came to visit me and my great grandma from all the way from Asakusa, Toyko.
She is holding a project on Meiji-era born people by interviewing and talking over about the history they have lived.
Her past away grandma was also from Meiji era. She used to listen her grandma's story when she was very little but she couldn't understand much about it at that time. She now says she can understand what her grandma was seeing and feeling at that time because she has now grown up enough to comprehend. She also says she wants to keep the story for others somehow to remail the fact of days they have had lived.
The fact never comes out on the surface and hidden deeply under the history book.

My great grandmother Matsue Tanaka was born the 39th year of Meiji period. She will be 101 years old in this June 25th.

Meiji era born Matsue become to join my friend's project this time.

As I was listening her talking like interview, I could see what was my great grand mother was doing at the Great kanto Earthquake.

She experienced that earthquake when she was 19 years old.
She was working at a fabric factory in Senju, Tokyo near Arakawa river.
She says she was living in the domitory of the factory with young girls like her from district area near Tokyo.

She says "It was so fun at that time..."

She remembers the feeling of "Fun", as she forgetting so many memories as she lives along. She doesn't even remember the name of the company she was working at that time.

She said she also remembered the fear of death being in the centre of the earth quake, and she was seeing a scarely river even she was actually seeing a little narrow path she walked with his father who came to pick her up all the way from Tochigi in the evening by train and on foot from the nearest train station.

I remembered that my great grand mother was saying before she forgot manythings. She said she saw so many wounded/ burnt people wanting andwaling toward the Arakawa river and soon after they drunk the water, they died. A riverbed of Arakawa were full of evacuated people and the river water was dyed almost red with blood with wounded people.
Some rumor was around like, "Chosenjin (Korean) poisened the river water" and "Chosenjin put the fire after the earthquake."
I think she released the details from the memory but the fear of Chosenjin.

I suppose that the prejudice of Chosenjin were so deep at that time.

I was born in Showa era. Meiji, Taisho, Showa and now we are living in Heisei era.
I understood the sadness and irony of ignorance of humanbeing by her word "Chosenjin comes."
